Internet access was disrupted across East African countries on Sunday due to damaged undersea cables.

Global web monitor, NetBlocks, in a post on X, said Tanzania and the French Indian Ocean Island of Mayotte were the hardest hit.

It noted that the incident was attributed to failures affecting the SEACOM and EASSy subsea cable systems.

“Confirmed: Network data show a disruption to internet connectivity in and around multiple East #Africa countries; the incident is attributed to failures affecting the SEACOM and EASSY subsea cable system,” it said on X, formerly Twitter.

NetBlocks reported internet outages in Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania, Malawi, Uganda, Rwanda and some others.

Sierra Leone, a West African country, was also affected.

Kenya's biggest telecoms operator Safaricom said it had "activated redundancy measures" to minimise the interruption.

“We have experienced an outage on one of the undersea cables that deliver internet traffic in and out of the country.

“We have since activated redundancy measures to minimise service interruption and keep you connected as we await the full restoration of the cable.

“You may, however, experience reduced internet speeds.

“We thank you for your patience and understanding,” it said on its X platform.
