Attorney General Bayo Ojo practicing certificate suspended.

April 24, 2007

In 2005 when Bayo Ojo was appointed as the Attorney General of the Nigerian Federation his resume stated that he was a practicing lawyer both in Nigeria and England and Wales, but all of it was a huge fallacy. As earlier reported by Saharareporters, Adebayo Ojo who was recently indicted and fined by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal of the Law Society of England and Wales for professional misconduct faces further sanctions from the bar. We have also found out that his certificate of practice has been suspended since 2005 and the Law Society does not intend to re-admit the federal attorney general anytime soon.

According to a letter received by Saharareporters from the Law Society of England and Wales signed by Carol Watson- the Information Services officer- of the Law Society, Mr. Bayo Ojo’s certificate of practice was suspended on August 12 2005 as a punishment for participating in a law firm (Solicitors Direct) engaged in illegal activities including scams perpetrated against clients. Though Mr. Bayo Ojo denies the charges brought against his person and his collaborators, the Law Society is not convinced and has also moved further to close down the law firm jointly owned by the Federal Attorney General and Mr. Agu.

With the suspension of his certificate of practice, Mr. Bayo Ojo faces another major hurdle; he may be getting removed from the membership of the International Law Commission to which he was barely elected a few months ago. Our investigations at the ILC shows that Mr. Bayo Ojo did not disclose his indictments and suspension to the ILC screening committee the same way he hid it from the federal government until Saharareporters exposed him.

Sources at the presidency said Mr. Bayo Ojo is seriously lobbying the newly "(s)elected" Yar'adua to continue as the Attorney General of the Federation, an ambition to which the justices of the Supreme Court and the Nigeria Judicial Commission (NJC) is totally and vehemently opposed.

Thank you for your e-mail dated 4 April 2007.

I have checked our records and can confirm that Christopher Adebayo Ojo was admitted to the roll of solicitors of England and Wales on 15 January 1999.  However, Mr Ojo's practising certificate was suspended on 12 August 2005 and I can also confirm that he was a partner in the firm Solicitors Direct which was subsequently intervened and closed down by the Law Society on 9 August 2005.  Mr Ojo does not currently hold a practising certificate.
