EFCC Probe: Two Governors escapes

May 24, 2007

The threat by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to arrest corrupt governors has led to the sudden escape of the two governors from Nigeria.

The governor of Jigawa state Saminu Turaki and Chimaroke Nnamani who are both accused by the EFCC for their involvement in the looting of their respective state treasuries have left Nigeria to avoid being arrested and prosecuted by the EFCC.

The Jigawa State governor who rarely lived in Nigeria while in office was said to be engaged in corruption from the days of Abacha, he however bribed his way out of trouble by donating heavy sums to the Obasanjo campaigns in 1999 and 2003, he was  also campaigning for third term for preisent Obasanjo. It is unclear why he had to flee at this time, even though our sources said the weight of evidence against him will lead to unavoidable prosecution by the EFCC no matter what!

Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani of Enugu state is a newly "elected" senator during the last flawed April  national elections but the EFCC already filed cases of money laundering against him and some officials of the Enugu state government. He was accused of buying 174 houses with Enugu State money and stands to be arrested by the EFCC as soon as his immunity expires on May 2007.

Vice President Atiku is said to be "hiding-out" in Potomac, Maryland where he plans to spend the rest of his tenure as VP. The VP who left for London ostensibly to rehabilitate his knees which were recently operated upon has ended in Potomac in the outskirts of Washington DC.
