Breaking News: Asari Dokubo granted bail by the Federal High Court, Abuja

June 13, 2007

A federal High Court judge, Justice Peter Olayiwola granted bail to Alhaji Asari Dokubo earlier today on health grounds. This effectively put paid to a long winding trial of the Niger Delta militant whose incarceration had led to kidnappings of expatriates in the Niger Delta region.

In a proposal put forward by the federal Solicitor -General, Salihu Aliyu and accepted by counsels to Asari Dokubo, Messrs Festus Keyamo,  Alhaji Dokubo was granted bail on the conditions that he not participate in any political rallies or gatherings,; that he is not allowed to participate in political activities; that he reports to the nearest State Security Service (SSS) office before embarking on any trips outside of the state or country and that he appears before the court at any given time his health improves.

His bail conditions were similar to those proposed by Niger Delta governors who had approached Umar Yar'adua to seek his release. Though the Special Adviser to Yar'adua , Dr. Igali said the bail was purely a judicial matter, many observers believe that this was resolved politically a few days ago and only implemented through the federal High court.
