IG of Police, Mike Okiro Cancels meeting with EFCC officials

January 6, 2008

Smarting from severe public outcry and criticisms over the shady way he collaborated with corrupt former governors to sideline Nuhu Ribadu as the EFCC chairman. The Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro already cancelled a meeting scheduled for today between topmost members of Nigerian police hierarchy and 395 police officers serving at the EFCC.

The Nigeria media is awash with reports quoting police authorities as calling for a meeting scheduled for today at 10: 00 AM (Monday) at the force headquarters in Abuja, but Saharareporters learns that the Inspector General had already met with the EFCC chairman, Nuhu Ribadu last week Friday in the presence of Yar’adua chief of staff to iron out all official issues pertaining to the policemen serving at the EFCC.

Earlier today the force public relations officer to the Nigerian Police, ACP Agberebi Egbuson Akpoebi told Saharareporters from Abuja that the meeting was only “conceived but not concretized” and as such will not be holding as reported in the media.

Another source at the Presidency also told Saharareporters that Umar Musa Yar’adua has decided to let things “cool down” because of his upcoming trip to Davos, Switzerland where Yar’adua will attend his first ever World Economic Forum. Yar’adua is expected to depart Nigeria on January 22 2008 to return back on January 26 2008.

Western countries, mainly US, the UK and Germany have secretly expressed outrage at the redeployment of Nuhu Ribadu by the Yar’adua government, a statement which will be made public by the US State Department today will describe Nuhu Ribadu’s redeployment as suspicious according to a US state department official who didn’t want to be named. Also, US congressman Tom Lantos of California have expressed outrage at the redeployment of Nuhu Ribadu.
Congressman Lantos was the only member of the US congress who met with Yar’adua during his controversial visit to the US late last year.
