Murder Trial: Weeping Fayose Moved To Ado Ekiti-PM News

January 23, 2008
Embattled former governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, was this morning, at about 4 a.m. moved from Ikoyi Prisons in Lagos to the Ado Ekiti Prisons by the police to face trial for alleged murder. Fayose, who is currently facing a 51-count charge for allegedly laundering N1.4 billion of Ekiti State fund, was on Monday granted bail by Justice Tijani Abubakar of the Federal High Court, Lagos.

He was yet to meet the conditions attached to the bail when he was re-arrested and taken to Ado Ekiti.Image removed.

P.M.News authoritatively gathered that Fayose wept uncontrollably and collapsed last night when he was told by the Controller of Prisons that he was going to be moved today to Ekiti Prisons.

He was immediately rushed to the prison’s clinic where he was put on drip. He later regained consciousness.

Our source said as early as 4 a.m. today when he was about to be taken away to Ekiti, he resisted but he was overpowered by policemen who were directed to carry out the task.

He was later driven to the Ado Ekiti Prisons and the team arrived at about 9.30 a.m.

However, his registration formalities took so long at the prison that the presiding judge at the Ado Ekiti High Court, Justice Adetayo, stood the matter down because he could not wait for Fayose to be brought before him.

This has, however, created a problem since Fayose cannot be remanded in prison without the order of a court.

He could either be brought back to Ikoyi Prisons in Lagos or the police will keep him in their custody until the matter comes up again.

Fayose is to be tried for the alleged murder of a student, Tunde Omojola, on 28 May 2005.

Omojola, a student based in Netherlands, was the polling agent for his brother-in-law, Mr. Sulaiman Labaika, who was the National Conscience Party councillorship candidate in the by-election conducted for Ifaki ward, in Ido/Osi Local Government Council of Ekiti State.

He was killed during the violence which rocked the town on the day of the election.

An Ado Ekiti High Court had earlier issued a warrant for Fayose’s arrest for murder and ordered the authorities at the Ikoyi Prisons to produce him in the court to face trial.

The failure of Ikoyi Prisons authorities to produce Fayose forced the court to adjourn the trial till today, only for it to be stalled again because of the delay in registering him at the Ado-Ekiti Prisons.
