WASHINGTON-A woman who had an affair with the husband of Nigeria's former finance minister has been sentenced to 20 months in prison for helping to extort $185,000 from the husband to keep their relationship a secret.

A federal judge sentenced Queen Nwoye, 30, on Monday. In addition to the prison term, the judge ordered Nwoye to pay $180,000 in restitution.

Prosecutors say Nwoye and a partner threatened to reveal her past affair with neurosurgeon Ikemba Iweala. Iweala is married to Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a high-ranking World Bank official and former finance minister of Nigeria.

They say Nwoye and her partner demanded payments to keep quiet. The doctor paid the money but alerted authorities.

Nwoye kept $11,000 of the proceeds, while her co-conspirator kept the rest. In November, Nwoye was convicted of conspiracy to commit extortion. Her partner was not charged in the case.
