STOP THE FUND RAISING FOR BARRACK OBAMA

August 8, 2008

Written By Femi Falana

In 2003 an organization called CORPORATE NIGERIA led by Professor Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke raised over N2 billion from several companies which was contributed to the Obasanjo/Atiku Campaign Fund. Even though the action violated the provisions of the Electoral Act and the Companies and Allied Matters Act the relevant law enforcement agencies could not muster the political will to bring “Corporate Nigeria” to book..

A few weeks ago another organization called “Africa for Obama ‘08” led by Professor Okereke-Onyiuke was established in Nigeria to mobilize support for Mr. Barrack Obama, the Presidential candidate of the Democratic Party in the United States of America. In the Thursday, August 7, 2008 edition of THISDAY Newspaper the organization invited Nigerians to a fund raising Dinner/Concert at the Shell Hall, Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos on Monday August 11, 2008.

According to the said Advertisement tickets for the Dinner/Concert will be sold from amounts ranging from N275,000 per individual to N2.5 million per corporate bodies. The funds raised at the Dinner/Concert will be contributed to the Barack Obama Campaign Fund contrary to the Electoral Law of the United States of America which forbids any form of external financing of political campaigns.

In view of the clear provisions of the United States’ Law on external funding of political campaigns the “Africa for Obama ’08” should be restrained from raising funds for Mr. Barrack Obama’s campaign. Otherwise Mr. Obama is surely going to be scandalized by a powerful section of the US Media controlled by the Republican Party.
