“PUBLISH YAR’ADUA’S HEALTH STATUS WITHOUT DELAY”, LAGOS AC TELLS THE PRESIDENCY.-LAGOS AC

August 31, 2008

Press Release.

Worried by the escalating rumours and the contentions between official and unofficial quarters about the health conditions of President Umaru Musa Yar’ Adua, Lagos AC has demanded for a categorical statement on the health of the President and the subsequent determination of his capability to continue to lead the country. The party says that the continued floundering of the ship of the Nigerian State does not demand the kind of secretive play-acting that now go on at the seat of power and cautioned that such state of uncertainly portends evil for the country.

In a release in Lagos, signed by the party’s Lagos State Publicity Secretary, Joe Igbokwe, Lagos AC says that time has come for the President health status to be put on the board for all Nigerians to see his capability to continue functioning as the nation’s president. It said that the present cat-and-mouse game between Nigerians and the presidency could only lead to instability, which the country can ill-afford at this precarious stage of its nationhood.

“With the insistence of independent news sources that Yar’Adua is presently afflicted by perennial ill-health and the continued denial of presidential sources of such insinuation, we are deeply troubled that the Nigerian State continues to oscillate between unsure and tentative hands and power speculators that are struggling to catch up with the reality of the presidential indisposition. We are afraid that country is presently afflicted by the dearth of leadership, which had robbed it of the needed direction to steer through the many woes that presently beset her.

“We are worried that the continued absence of the president is confirming the contention of many that all is not well with the country and we are deeply worried that the country is left to wallow in a discernable leadership inertia as a result of the health status of the president. Our deep worries does not stem from any insinuation that the president is immortal but the worrying predilection to play games with the health condition of the president while Nigeria plunges deeper into leadership crisis.

“Cognizant of the fact that the country is not in the best of times, we are worried that an incapacitated presidency stands to inflict a terrible blow to a prostrate country that is tossing at the very precipice of regression. We therefore believe that only a true, factual and laconic public statement from the presidency about the health status of Yar’Adua and the implications of his present health conditions will suffice to convince Nigerians of the capability or not of their president.

“Lagos AC feels that the insinuations and suppositions about the president’s health has become a public liability that must be cleared once and for all. The precarious nature of his health is costing the nation so much, not only in the scant attention paid to leadership but also in terms of the disruptions it now portends for the nation. We therefore demand that Nigerians be made to be aware of what is presently happening to their president so that they will determine if he is indeed capable to rule or not, as prescribed by the country’s constitution. Further delay will place the country in immediate danger of instability.”
