Criminals in Rivers state government-MEND

October 7, 2008
The recent revelation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of huge financial crimes by top government functionaries in the Rivers state government of Nigeria just confirmed what the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has always known. Today we have been vindicated and the public now knows who the real criminals are.

In a case of the pot calling the kettle black, the Rivers state governor, Mr Rotimi Amaechi branded everyone else but itself and the Hausa  military Joint Task Force (JTF) as criminals. They went as far as creating unrest to cover up their nefarious activities by attacking and burning down civilian communities under the guise of looking for militants. They are also arresting, detaining and killing youths of fighting age in Port Harcourt after falsely branding them as militants.

MEND is aware that the government of Rivers state, the JTF and the Ministry of Defense required a state of confusion in order to thrive with the looting of the treasury and that was why after the ceasefire was declared they were trying to provoke us into giving them that opportunity which we denied them.

Because we have no faith in the government and because we know that these criminals may be let off the hook easily, MEND will be watching the events closely. If we are not satisfied with the measure of  justice meted out, we will make Rivers state ungovernable by creating a state of anarchy.
