EFCC’S MISSING FILE: SIMPLY RIDICULOUS

October 13, 2008
The story circulating to the effect that the files documenting the cases against some former Governors are missing is unbelievable and ridiculous. I want to believe that Madam Farida was misquoted. How can files be missing and no one has been arrested? Are we supposed to believe that an institution such as the EFCC charged with the onerous responsibility of enforcing statutes on economic crime and money laundering cannot secure case files? If that is the case, then the case for the overhauling of the organization cannot be better made by those at its helms. The story is quite troubling.

The worrisome implication is that those who had suggested that Madam Farida was planted by the selfsame Governors whose case files are missing might feel vindicated by the story of missing case files. After all we know that the easiest way to kill any case is to destroy the case file. We as a people need reassurance by Madam Farida and her appointers that the EFCC has not become a joke. The earlier a retraction of the ridiculous statement is made the better for all of us.
Nevertheless, I still believe that the EFCC is one institution that we must lend our support. If it fails, It would be impossible for this country to develop. Whatever battle or war that we need to wage, now is the time.

The war against corruption cannot be permitted to be aborted by those who have a stake in the continuation of graft. Those files must be found by all means or Madam should excuse herself or be excused by the National Assembly from the leadership of the organization. It is useless to have a leadership that cannot keep files. I am sure no one will like to insult us by telling us any nonsense that the files disappeared during the transitional period in the organization. We need the particulars of the missing files and those ordinarily in custody of the files.
