Ekiti State Fraud: UBA Reacts

March 12, 2009
PRESS STATEMENT: Our attention has been drawn to the story making the rounds in the media about an alleged withdrawal of N1billion of state funds in UBA by officials of the Ekiti State government.

  Though it is not our normal practice to discuss our relationships with customers in the media, we are constrained, for the avoidance of doubt, to make the following declarations to set the records straight;

 ✓     UBA maintains account relationship with Ekiti State government and will continue to discharge its obligations to the state in line with the account mandates.

 ✓     All withdrawals made from the state government account have been in the normal course of business and in accordance with the account mandates.                                                                                                   ✓     We recently honored cheques presented through clearing. There were no cash withdrawals nor direct payments to contractors through us as all cheques were made in favour of Ekiti State Government (to fund Ekiti State Government accounts with other banks).

 ✓     The instruments in question were duly signed by authorized signatories  in this case, the  Accountant-General  and the Deputy Accountant-General, who are career Civil Servants  From the foregoing it is clear that UBA has not acted in any culpable manner. We therefore urge all parties to leave us out of the EKITI STATE POLITICS and allow us to concentrate on the business of banking for which we are known for.

 As the largest financial services provider in Nigeria and the region in particular, we provide banking solutions to over 6 million customers through our over 750 business offices and other numerous remote locations.

 Signed
