Ekiti Re-run: PDP is a curse on Nigeria

April 26, 2009

The just concluded (i.e. if it’s concluded at all) re-run election in Ekiti State has again exposed the ruling party, Peoples Democratic Party, as a cancerous growth that must be uprooted if meaning development is to take place in this country. The do-or-die mentality of the Obasanjo era is still very much prevalent within the party. I am the least surprised as I know that a tiger will always give birth to a tiger.

Any keen observer of political developments of Ekiti State will in all sincerity give the State to the Action Congress any day. Moreover, the two personalities at the centre of events, Kayode Fayemi and Segun Oni are two contrasting figures that will give the Action Congress an edge over the Peoples Democratic Party. The Action Congress candidate, Fayemi has towering credentials that will dwarf most candidates in any election.

All the above notwithstanding, the PDP will not allow the will of the people prevail even if for once only. All manners of plans were perfected to subvert the wills of the majority. The PDP failed in its attempt to draft in military to guard them when carrying out their nefarious activity of rigging. A Governor in a neighbouring State was caught perfecting plans to provide fake army uniforms to help in the rigging process. As God will have it, all these heinous plans of theirs were exposed before they could be carried out.

Why is PDP always afraid of a free and fair election if they are as popular as they claim? The largest party in sub Saharan Africa, yet it can not come out and compete in an election? What a shame! At least, the party should try its popularity for once and allow for a free election. Stop all the ballot stuffing, ballot snatching, multiple thumb printing, harassment of opposition, reliance on INEC/Police to circumvent the wish of the people, thugery etc.

To worsen matters, INEC and the other law enforcement agencies have become PDP’s instruments of rigging. In many instances, INEC have constituted impediment to free polls and the police have aided them in doing this. The situation in Ekiti has not been different from the established standard of the PDP. Rig at all cost. Use police, SSS, Army, INEC etc to get what they want.

The suspension of announcement of the remaining wards is a tactical way INEC wants to employ to assist the PDP to rig again. With defeat staring at their faces, they are thinking of doing the unthinkable – rig and rig until they can rig no more.

The news filling the air is that the Resident Electoral Commissioner has been mandated by her boss in Abuja to announce the result of the remaining wards in favour of PDP but she blatantly refused. She has no option than to vanish into thin air when the pressure was becoming unbearable to her. At her age, she feels there are certain things she won’t just do. So, this story about her taking ill after too much pressure is just a ruse. If at all she takes ill, it is the pressure from Iwu and PDP that is responsible.

On a final note, Professor Maurice Iwu should stop blaming all politicians for the woes in Ekiti. It is the PDP that does not give peace a chance. And Ekiti people are not ready to accept the evil plot of PDP to steal their mandate again. Never!
