Background-On 31st May 2009, Nasir Ahmad EL-Rufai a former Director General of The Bureau of Public Enterprises, the head privatization agency in Nigeria and also the former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja from 16 July 2004 to 29 May 2007 and a member of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Nigeria released a detailed expose on President Umaru Yar’Adua titled “Great Expectation, Disappointing Outcome” which revealed how Umaru Yar’Adua came to power and how he has failed to deliver on his pre-election promises to the Nigerian people.

Statement:
1. We welcome the realisation or admission by Alhaji El-Rufai that this present government has no legitimacy in the eyes of the majority of Nigerians and no credibility in the eyes of the International community.
2. The statement released by Alhaji El-Rufai is valuable only in so far as it tells the people of Nigeria what they did not already know about the manoeuvres by means of which President Umaru Yar’Adua was forced upon the leadership of the country through the agency of General Olusegun Obasanjo.
3. The statement is less valuable in so far as it attempts to give a lead to the people of Nigeria in the conclusion that they should draw on the competence of this PDP administration and its past and present leadership as the people have already formed their conclusions which they have long since been voicing to those who cared to hear.
4. The statement is of no value whatsoever in so far as it attempts to suggest a path for the people of Nigeria to follow because
o the change that the people of Nigeria need cannot be led by those who did not share the pain from the years of bad governance. Alhaji El-Rufai was, after all, an adviser in General Abdulsalami Abubakar’s Transition government, which produced the Obasanjo administration, and which in turn produced this Yar’Adua administration.
o Nigerians never having at any time before heard Alhaji El–Rufai’s words of protest on their behalf ,, although there was plenty that he could have joined them in protesting over, it is difficult for the people of Nigeria to say whether the thoughts, so well articulated in the statement, are that of another professional speech writer, such as he says wrote Yar’Adua’s inaugural speech, or the heartfelt words of Alhaji El-Rufai himself even if inspired only by his present harassment by the administration.
o The people of Nigeria need a complete break from the Obasanjo era to renew Nigeria.
