President Obama in Ghana: Will Nigeria learn any lessons from this?

July 10, 2009

The visiting American President praised Ghana for practising transparent democracy and urged Ghana to lead the way forward in Africa.

We referred to Nigeria as the giant of Africa but a SLEEPING one. Can a sleeping giant lead his people (Africa)? Nigeria is selectively a giant in the areas of corruption and nepotism; it is a nation where the RULERS paid lip service to combating fraud in high places. It is a shame that our governments have continued posting our lives (the citizens) via their visionless policies. There have been countless of them in my lifetime; there had been vision 2000, 2010, and 2020 with the meaningless ‘7 Point Agenda’ to nothing; to mention but few of them.

It’s unfortunate that the Ghanaians we drove away from Nigeria in the 1980s have become so strong politically, economically and socially that our major industrial companies have started relocating to Ghana because of her political and economic stability and their transparencies backed by SERIOUS implementation of Law and Order.

In a year or two, Ghana’s oil and gas industries we’ll be in place and as President Atta Mills said, the money from the industries will be use to develop Ghana and its people. In the face of this, will Nigeria still be regarded as the giant of Africa in the next five years judging by the rapid developments that are going on in Ghana compared to our one step forward and five backward?

My kudos goes to JJ Rawlings, regardless of what his critics have to say about him; he is the founder of the modern day Ghana. He was bold and resolute, hence he was able to restructure and laid the foundation of the thriving Ghana of today. hence, in Ghana, politicians clearly understand that they may be call to answer to their actions while in or out of power while in Nigeria, politicians are above the law and or next to God!

Understandably, we Nigerians sleep in churches and mosques praying for change that will usher in better life in the land but unfortunately, we do not want to be involved in the process of change and our current RULERS understands and play on our failures! One thing they should realise is that as it happened in Ghana before Rawlings intervention, when a goat is chased to the wall without an escape route, it turn round and put up a fight of its life. Like it or not, change will occur in Nigeria but if care is not taken, the process may be through WIND and FIRE.
