Gentlemen, the Presidency is worried by the spate of class suicide and elite back-stabbing that has seemingly engulfed the country. First, it was the Sultan of Sokoto addressing the public in Kaduna and telling them that nothing works in Nigeria. He claimed, feloniously and erroneously, that there is “no light, no water, no food, no security” in Nigeria. Now, the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Archdiocese, John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan, has joined forces with the unpatriotic detractors of the current administration. Hear him talk about Nigeria in a recent media interview: “Any nation that does not care about good governance, builds itself on lies, does not care about the less privileged within its midst, the leaders are only interested in their own selfish interest and convenience and close their eyes completely to the poor, the sick, the aged and the youths and basic amenities are not their top priority, where roads are untended, factories are allowed to die, schools stay closed for months and nobody is worried, such a nation cannot say that they are building themselves into anything great. Such a nation is killing itself.” He didn’t stop at that: “Do not steal from the poor people because every money you steal from the government, you are stealing from the poor”. These unpatriotic statements, first from the Sultan and now from the Archbishop, are undoubtedly at variance with the spirit of the seven-point agenda. Consequently, Mr President is of the opinion that our Great Party needs to do something urgently about Archbishop Onaiyekan in order to move the country forward and restore the rule of law.

Acknowledging receipt of yours. The Party agrees with the President. All hands must be on the deck to stem the tide of unpatriotic statements and actions in high places. Talk like this could jeopardize our sixty-year rolling plan. Because he is a respected man of God, too many otherwise law abiding and patriotic Nigerians may be tempted to believe Archbishop Onaiyekan. Counter-measures and therefore in order. Given his considerable expertise in the pacification of primitive and unpatriotic Nigerians abroad, may I humbly suggest that we delegate that responsibility to our venerated colleague and Distinguished President of the Senate of the Federal Republic?

Acknowledging receipt of memos. This is a matter of urgent national importance. Thanks, Mr Party Chairman, for acknowledging my expertise in identifying and dealing with unpatriotic Nigerians, especially those noise makers abroad. My experience would definitely come in handy. What do the President and the Party have in mind? The Abacha solution or the Babangida solution?

Thanks, gentlemen, for your prompt responses and the seriousness with which you have taken this matter into consideration. To answer the question of the Senate President, the Abacha solution is tempting but very dangerous. Nobody will buy it even if we make it look like an accident. Besides, we risk a major international incident with the Vatican and an international community that is already so unpatriotic and anti-Nigeria. That is why we have imposed sanctions on the international community by not attending G20 meetings and the UN General Assembly. And then, there is the habitual bad faith of the Nigerian people. They will read meaning into the fact that the Sultan said pretty much the same thing and did not get the Abacha treatment. They would read tribalism and northern privilege into the whole thing.  In the circumstances, Mr. President is in favour of the Babangida solution.

I must again agree with and admire the President’s considerable wisdom. The Abacha solution is indeed tempting but we cannot afford it. That loud-mouthed Professor with the famous white mane will go about town calling us a nest of killers all over again. I support the Babangida method. A point of correction though: Archbishop John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan is a northerner like the Sultan. He is from Kabba in Kogi state. That makes him a technical Hausa man like our respected party elder from Mopa in Kogi state, the late Chief Sunday Bolorunduro Awoniyi.

Acknowledging receipt of all brilliant contributions.  I defer to the Presidency’s superior wisdom that we use the Babangida option and try to settle the Archbishop. I will launch operation chop-and-lets-chop with immediate effect. As I am acting on the authority of President Yar’Adua and Chief Ogbulafor, I am assuming that I have the full instruments of state at my disposal to bring the operation to fruition. Do I have a liquidity cap?

President approves operation chop-and lets-chop with immediate effect. No liquidity cap until the Archbishop is reined in. For limitless liquidity, please refer to Elder James Ibori who has generously agreed to fund the operation. In addition to the carrots of the Babangida method, the President also believes that we should have a contingency stick method. Should the carrot method fail, Ambassador Joe Keshi of Foreign Affairs Ministry has been put on notice to seize the Archbishop’s Nigerian passport on any foreign soil when next he ventures out of Nigeria and also deny him Consular Services. Ambassador Keshi is known to be very useful in such missions. Mr. Senate President, please commence the operation immediately.

Dear Archbishop Onaiyekan:

I write on behalf of President Yar’Adua and our esteemed party, the PDP, in furtherance of the President’s desire to bring respected religious leaders on board in our dogged determination to continue to publicize our intention to eventually launch a seven-point agenda and inaugurate the rule of law. As you know, we have recorded spectacular success in the last two years in terms of making Nigerians aware of our impending programmes and prepare them psychologically through the patriotic efforts of our colleague in the Ministry of information, Mrs. Dora Akunyili.

We are now in the phase of reaching out to religious leaders and organizations and I am delighted to inform you that Mr. President is fully aware of your illustrious achievements among the Catholic faithful that you have led so wonderfully since you became Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Ilorin before your current assignment here in Abuja. We are also mindful of the fact that you have been a wonderful seller and rebrander of Nigeria to the international community. Your work speaks for you.

To begin the process of patriotic collaboration with you and the Archdiocese of Abuja, the President has approved a number of friendly measures. First, he has instructed three respected party Elders – Chief James Ibori, Chief Tony Anenih, and Chief Dr Andy Uba – to personally attend the forthcoming thanksgiving Mass of your parish. They will be representing Mr. President and the PDP. Your Lordship, you may begin to put in place the logistics to host these three eminent Nigerians in your church. Contracts have already been awarded for the chairs they will use during Mass. The chairs will be delivered to your church for placement in the front row in due course. Please note that you will need to arrange for a bullion van and significant police escort to immediately take the offertory for that day to the bank. Obviously, because of the presence of the three men, offertory for that day cannot be what you are used to. To this end, the EFCC has been instructed not to get curious should the bank account of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja suddenly begin to rival the account of an oil company.

Your Lordship, the President believes that the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja needs a brand new Basilica. The Cathedral you currently use is not in consonance with the image of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as the giant of Africa. There is absolutely no reason why the world’s biggest Catholic Cathedral should be in Yamoussoukro. As part of our rebranding agenda, Mr. President would like to interest you in the possibility of building a Basilica in Abuja. Not to worry, you have the President’s anticipatory approval of import waivers on everything you will need for the project. Customs and Chief Tony Anenih at the NPA are already aware of the fact that the Catholic church will import huge building materials throughout 2010-2011.

We have also decided to break the monopoly of our trusted and dependable ally on the Lagos-Ibadan express way in terms of visits for photo-ops by top Federal government functionaries and party elders. Henceforth, you will share such privileges and perks with him. We also believe that you need a private jet in view of your frequent trips to the Vatican to confer with the Pope. To this end, could you please identify five financially healthy members of your church who could be persuaded to obtain a bank loan to buy a jet registered in your name but which they could loan to you every time you need to travel? A friendly bank manager has been instructed to await a loan application from five members of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja. Mr. Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has also received clear Presidential instructions not to interfere with the loan process. Needless to say, all taxes on the importation of the jet will be waived. Your jet will also enjoy free parking at the Nnamdi Azikiwe international airport.

Should you have questions regarding any of these proposals, please rest assured that I am willing to meet up with you for lunch at the Hilton Transcorp at your convenience.

I await your response.

Yours sincerely,

Major General David Mark (rtd)
Senate President, Federal Republic of Nigeria
