“Stop these Illegalities and Swear in the Vice President”, Lagos AC Demands

January 4, 2010

With the continued absence of the president on health reasons, the Lagos State chapter of the Action Congress has raised an alarm that the country may be governed by an illegal and amorphous group that derive their powers from somewhere else but the constitution. The party warns that the country is heading for anarchy should further attempts be made to subvert the constitution by continuing in the present instigated logjam so as to prevent the Vice President from carrying out his duties.

In a release in Lagos, signed by the Lagos State Publicity Secretary of the AC, Joe Igbokwe, Lagos AC says that with the president gone for over forty days and with no clear handover made, it is becoming obvious that an anti-democratic and amorphous group has seized power and are doing everything to ensure that no proper handover is conducted even as the country does not know the state of health of the president. It warns that pushing the tolerance of Nigerians further will certainly prod the country to anarchy unless a conscious effort is made to adhere to the constitution of Nigeria on the present dicey issue involving the president’s absence.

“We are alarmed that so far, nothing suggests the possible date for the president to return to the country yet, the Vice President, who is constitutionally empowered to act for the president in his absence is being vigorously prevented from assuming that constitutional responsibility. We all witnessed the ugly situation that led to the out going chief justice swearing in an incoming one when we should have an acting president that should carry out all the duties of the president in his absence. We also witnessed the controversial signing of the supplementary budget and we wonder how many illegalities and outright parodies should be tolerate to accommodate the whims and caprices of the cabal that want to retain power at all costs. We wonder how the country should be forced to continue living with such absurdities and annoying perfidies when the constitution of the country never allowed such vacuum that should flower the kind of invisible but amorphous cartel that now wield power in Nigeria.

“Lagos AC is concerned that in this long period of void, Nigeria is being tossed from one power speculator to another and we are concerned that an illegal cabal has seized power in what should be a democratic dispensation. We are more concerned that in this interregnum that is tending to infinity, this same cabal is busy perpetrating so many vices and forcing them down on Nigerians. We are concerned about the state of the Nigerian treasury in this uncertain period but most importantly, we are concerned about who takes responsibilities for the many actions taken in this period.

“We are at a loss as to why the present impasse should exist when the constitution provides immediate provisions for situations like the one we now find ourselves. We therefore call that no further delay be entertained in swearing in the Vice President to act for the president pending when the later will be fit enough to resume office. We demand that the cabal that has been wielding power since President Yar’Adua’s absence disband and hand over power to the Vice President who is constitutionally empowered to act in a period of this to avert a dirty scenario that is building up since the hospitalization of President Yar’Adua.

“We strongly demand that the Vice President be sworn in immediately as acting president while we await the return of the president. We demand that things be properly done in this period of anxiety and we call on all men of goodwill to support this timely demand. We demand a quick return to sanity in the management iof the affairs of this country.”
