Goodluck Jonathan the Reluctant Leader

March 4, 2010

Position of authority or power does not confer the holder the designation of a leader. The holder of a position of authority and yet never exercise the skill set of charisma, courage, conviction, decisiveness, patriotism and above all the responsibility for rescuing the rest of us from whatever threat we face cannot be called a leader.

Position of authority or power does not confer the holder the designation of a leader. The holder of a position of authority and yet never exercise the skill set of charisma, courage, conviction, decisiveness, patriotism and above all the responsibility for rescuing the rest of us from whatever threat we face cannot be called a leader.
I have mixed and admittedly contradictory feelings about Goodluck Jonathan. On one hand I think he stands for the dictionary definition of what an individual in power of authority is and on the other I think he is nothing short of a disappointment so far.
I read his political resume and one thought always comes to my mind – why on earth is he shying away from his responsibility as Acting President. With the benefit of hindsight, Jonathan is a godsend to Nigerians from Sokoto to Jalingo, Gboko to Oshogbo, Okitipupa to Jeddo and Patani to Enugu. His Presidency can realistically usher a permanent prosperity and unity for all Nigerians.

I always speak about true democracy and unity of Nigeria – Jonathan is the embodiment of that phrase. During his time as Vice President he reluctantly responded to the functions of government even when President Yar’Adua is out of the country. He believed that for the sake of unity. One should not be perceived as being power hungry and hence be loyal to the President. He believes that a Vice President should be seen and not heard. What a concept, huh?

But with that said, Jonathan is very much a political coward. How this man who rose from the position of Deputy Governor served admirably for his country doesn’t have the stomach for political warfare is beyond me. He has the chance to breakdown barriers that no other head of state or president had chance of breaking.

I hope he and his family are not carried away by fear of his safety and the possibility of full term as President. I don’t blame them. But this is an opportunity for Dr. Jonathan to accomplish his greatest achievement, to show the Nigerian people and the People Democratic Party (PDP) in his own party how idiotic their views on governance and democracy truly are and an opportunity to get rid of the stereotypical view that you must be corrupt to be successful in government.

But fear is taking the best of Jonathan. This is why I found the man tragically disappointing. Again, you can’t help but be in awe of this enormous opportunity, but sometimes you are meant to do more in life. Sometimes a higher- power bestows on you talents of leadership for the use of the greater good, to lead your country to a better social-global plain.

I am urging Acting President Jonathan to step up to the plate and act as a true leader by dissolving the Federal executive council, replacing them with non partisans. And also relieve the heads of both EFCC and INEC of their duties.
