IBB: The Charismatic Psychopath Yearning To Return To Power

April 13, 2010

Hearing from the horse’s mouth, IBB’s yearnings to return to Aso rock villa is no longer a speculation but a reality and ordinarily, the retired general and one time dictatorial president has the constitutional rights to aspire to a political office especially when he has not been convicted of any crime by any court of law in Nigeria, but morally he ought not to have the audacity to cause distractions in our efforts to sustain democratic culture.

IBB fits the definition of a charismatic psychopath and since this is a disorder, and even if he is perceived as a goal driven adventurer, his return to power would definitely hurt than soothe the socio and economic health of the country. This argument should be reinforced by all right thinking Nigerians to counter the opinion molders in the General’s camp who are going about to corrode the psyche of our people that he is coming back to correct his mistakes as a military leader.

Let the people be told that his alter ego, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, a sociopath who had a twenty year gap and went through real lessons of life (harrowing prison experience), bungled the opportunity at his second coming and this is simply because he has an incurable social disorder and like his junior colleague in the army, who both had an understanding regarding Project Nigeria in 1999, he too is a goal driven adventurer, and more, he is imbued with sadism. An opportunity for IBB therefore, after seventeen years, will be botched just like Chief Olusegun Obasanjo because they are personalities driven by self interests and Psychopathy.

Make no mistakes; the intending aspirant has the intense capacity and wherewithal to wriggle his ways through an impoverished country and population. Crop of best intellectual sophists are at his beck and call and they are adroit in their diabolical knowledge such that a crystal white object can be argued to be black in the minds of their victims; they are also gifted in setting agenda and putting the right thinking minds on the defensive.

When the opportunity presented itself, the cabal headed by Babangida maximized every opportunity to remain relevant for a long time to come; wealth, power, influence, intimidation and black mail, formation and sustenance of cells around the country to further its interests in the scheme of things in Nigeria, and it ensured that it entrenched poverty in such a huge magnitude that it became a way of life; and it also becomes a fire and water chemistry. When there is fire, large amount of water quenches it on the spot. Therefore anything, any institution, any individual with the exception of few who qualifies for virgins in vast maternity wards, are buyable.

It is therefore difficult to sit and vouchsafe whether or not he can win, it is possible for the pendulum to swing into either side but it is most undesirable for the health and cohesion of the country and her over 140 million population consisting of largely many living below poverty line and whose human capital development is at high risk.

If the right plug is fixed to the right engine, the automobile will roar to life, suffice to say if the right people are elected into the office, it will not the next moon before the positive impact starts to trickle down, but definitely IBB does not have the Midas touch simply because he is a Charismatic psychopath and a goal driven adventurer.

So who is a Charismatic psychopath? Psychopathy is a personality disorder and one who possesses it is said to be “morally depraved” individual. Charismatic psychopath is said to be a “charming, attractive liar…usually gifted at some talent or another…” which more often than not, he uses to his own benefit in manipulating others and through his demonic ability, he can persuade others to loathe everything their own including their lives. Such is the potency of his irresistibility and such is his toxic leadership.

Like a sociopath, he is egocentric and others are valuable to him only when they can aggrandize his pleasures and position. He is generally unremorseful, and does not possess any real love but can inspire others to love him awesomely. When others come to harm through his actions, he is not sympathetic talk less of reversing the situation as imagining were he to be in that situation. He is an extrovert, who loves to be adored by others and he basks in the euphoria of praises by others. Words constitute part of his ability to get out of trouble notwithstanding the honours attached to it.

Like all other forms of psychopaths, a charming psychopath longs for power and possession and more often prefers shortcuts to sweating to get his desires. He is skilful in manipulation and knows best most people’s deeper pathologies through which he manipulates and ‘influence” their “feelings”.

Research is said to have shown that this disorder is associated with “...neurological abnormalities…in the frontal lobe of the brain” and this has made “lies, deceiving and manipulation” inborn traits of a psychopath and it all trickle down to ability to dominate others. He would engage in selective amnesia if it suits his purpose in a particular situation when his lies are detected. The attributes are endless but the few adumbrated above are all reflected in IBB’s personality trait.

A myth was built around Babangida when he was reported to have mesmerized blood shot Bukar Sukar Dimka during the failed coup that claimed the life of General Murtala Muhammed in 1976 without firing a shot. Dimka was eventually executed for the high treason he and fellow soldiers committed at the time. Unfortunately, Dimka did not have the opportunity to tell his own side of the story about his encounter with Ibrahim Babangida around the radio house in Ikoyi.

As a young adult, late Obafemi Awolowo was my hero and he remains one of my heroes till date, when the military government of Muhammadu Buhari started to harass him and his followers especially when his house was broken into in Apapa, it brought odium and more hatred for the Buhari regime. Though the government was embarrassed because it did not authorize the action, yet it tacitly admitted responsibility for it. It was long after the unfortunate incident that General Buhari “declassified “ the incident in an interview when he attributed it to a fifth columnist in his government then and that was Babangida. That he returned Awo’s documents and referred the old man made the likes of us to fall in love with him but Chief Obafemi Awolowo, a sage of the first order did not suffer fools gladly; he told those who cared to listen. that generations to come may not witness democracy despite Babangida’s gimmicks of political programmes intended to usher in democracy.

When he toppled the government headed by Buhari, general Babangida assumed the title of a president whereas he was in all intent and purpose a dictator; he did it to assuage the feelings of the people as if the ‘Gestapo’ era of the past administration had become a thing of the past, he exposed the recklessness of the then NSO and the notorious ‘Ita oko’ detention centre first introduced by sociopath Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as a military head of state. Ongoing corruption cases of political detainees then were reviewed. Some determined cases were either reduced or commuted to give ‘human face’ after all jail terms should serve as a correction and not punitive, the Babangida government would reason then. But the government substituted all these gestures with killings and assassinations suspected to be masterminded by the government of the day. It was during the era that a high profile urbane journalist, Dele Giwa was killed via parcel bomb.

The regime of Muhammadu Buhari suspended return to democratic rule and were not pretentious about it, the Babangida regime encouraged it but with lip service and to keep dumb politicians busy in adventure to perdition. At the end of the whole process, the country was dealt a terrible blow and a deep laceration that is yet to fully heal till date.

Babangida’s friendship philosophy does not foreclose sending a supposed best friend to the battlefield that he is not meant to return alive.  It mattered less to Babangida that his friend, M.K.O. Abiola who at a stage got bitten by Babangida’s bug of psychopathic disorder, be made to suffer humiliation in the hands of ‘the mad dogs” who assaulted him on the streets of Lagos and MKO could not reach out to his “friend” when it mattered most. The General, as a psychopath could not have bothered what become of his childhood friend, Mamman Vatsa, who was sentenced to death for alleged coup attempt. M.K.O. Abiola was not lucky the second time he trusted his friend, as events unfolded in quick successions that led to his death in detention.

Lying, deception and manipulation being the hobbies of a psychopath, General Babangida promised each and every one of the 23 aspirants the presidency and the potency of the deception was so strong that when a candidate was losing in the party primaries  in every ward, local and state levels  he continued to forge ahead because he was basking in the assurance of the military head of state’s promise to him unknown to him that all the other 22 aspirants were promised the only one seat but with stern instructions not to reveal the secret. At the end of it all, they were all rubbished, and even had to spend some time in jails for working on their surrogates after they had been banned.

Despite the fact that sheer greed and intent to rule for ever was the main reason for not annulling the June 12 1993 presidential election won by the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the psychopath in IBB has made him unrepentant and has continued to justify his unpatriotic actions, and  continue to concoct series of lies about it.

Were he not a psychopath, he would have humbled himself before Nigerians and asked for their forgiveness, but because it is only the violence aspect of most psychopaths that is said to taper off after age of 50 and not all the other attributes, the general has continued to insult the intelligence of the ‘Good people’ and the ‘Great Nation’.

On the balance of probability therefore, an IBB presidency the second time would definitely hurt, harm and reverse the hands of clock in Nigeria. If he is lucky to have escaped prosecution from subsequent governments after his own, he should also spare the country his toxic and poisonous venom this time around. After all what one does not possess, he cannot give; and integrity and strength of character constitute the fulcrum upon which a leader should aspire to the highest political office in any civilized society.
