The Urgency Of Now

April 14, 2010

As we gradually and steadily move towards 2011, it is imperative on all of us, all who love Nigeria to appreciate the urgency of now.  The urgency of now to do everything humanly possible to stop PDP and the fiends who constitute that party from coming to power. It will be foolish, reckless and naive on our part to believe the platitudes of Dr Jonathan about electoral reform. If the system will be reformed at all, it will be to the benefit of these "nest of killers", not for the common good of Nigeria.

It is time for us to make our voices heard and not just that, to see that we stop the downward slide of our country into further peril. We have all witnessed in the last 5-6 months the open display of ineptitude, crass opportunism and outright contempt the Yardua family and the PDP showed  for Nigeria. We all sat quiet while our so called governors violated the constitution. We all sat quiet  while the Federal executive council pre Jonathan era refused to invoke section 144 of the constitution  while Imelda Yardua held the whole country hostage. It was convenient to issue executive fiats in the name of a missing  and dangerously ill president. Signature was forged on the budget, fake voice over was sent to BBC hausa service with active connivance of the BBC and yet we all looked the other way.,

In all these times, our friends died, 144 women died in child birth daily ( WHO statistics), we lost family members because the hospitals were not there, we lost loved ones to death traps called roads in Nigeria, roads whose allocation was stolen by PDP ministers, we receeded into the stone age without electricity and yet our politicians grew fat on us. They ran to hospitals overseas for tooth ache and head ache. Some of them grew so fat on our monies enough to require abdominoplasty. Yet these same set of people in the PDP are scheming to hold on to power, to continue the abuse of Nigeria and Nigerians. Friends, it is presently urgent that we must do everything possible to stop these people once and for all.

We cannot continue like this. The urgency of now is that we cannot afford to miss this opportunity to excise the cancer of PDP and the current political class as constituted from our body politic. The urgency of now is that if we miss this opportunity, we will never be able to shake off the curse of the PDP on Nigeria. The urgency of now is that many  more of us will be forced out of the country as economic refugees . The time to act is now.

I see divine intervention in the Yardua case. God gives life and takes it indeed, but sometimes, God will strike down a wicked king to set His own people free. How else can we explain the tension and more than frequent flare up in different parts of the country. We have had BOKO HARAM, JOS IS A RIVER OF BLOOD, how about the KALO KATO ATTACKERS, THE RELIGIOUS AND ECONOMIC FRUSTRATION IN BAUCHI WHICH MORPHED INTO RELIGIOUS CRISIS. Kidnapping is the norm and no longer the exception, more than 90% of our children failed the NECO exams this year, colleges and universities were closed for most of last year, yet the former minister of education had enough time to splash, and vulgarly too on a wedding anniversary. There is an urgency of now. Now is the time to take our destinies in our hands. we must be free or die trying.

It is no longer news that the imp from hell, Ibrahim babangida is warming to come back to finish off Nigeria. He has a sense of entitlement. He has a massive financial war chest to steal his way into power. He knows the psychological mind frame of his fellow travelers in the PDP. He knows they are high way merchants of death. They have a price, and he is willing to buy them. What he does not have however, is the minds of the majority of Nigerians who can stop him. There is an urgency of now to stop this man who is a curse on Nigeria. We stopped him in 1993, we can do so again. . If we do not, we shall be sentenced to perpetual servitude.

He was such an irresponsible man, devoid of ideas and mettle that he could not even build a good hospital in Nigeria. He, it was who closed universities for one year just because students supposedly booed him. Of course we all saw how his wife died from ovarian cancer in a foreign hospital. If only both of them were wise enough to invest in medical schools,  students, and hospitals. May be she would have seen the signs and symptoms of her disease long before it mestasized and it became terminal. Yet, this man had no shame to go sit in a foreign hospital nursing a terminally ill woman. You wonder where the oil windfall went. There is an urgency of now to stop this man, to stop PDP, to wrestle our lives and future from the hands of these marauders.

Who did not read the account of Abubakar Rimi's death. Kano specialist hospital reportedly did not have a  wheel chair to get the man from the car to the emergency room until he died. That is the urgency of now, on why we must take our destinies in our hands. Enough is just enough. Governor Yardua did not deem it fit to build state of the art hospitals in his home state of Katsina, he still did not see any reason why he should build one since he assumed the presidency. He found it more convenient to go to Saudi Arabia for a cold! The sad thing is that these serial economic rapists fail to realize that Nigeria has some of the best Oncologists, cardiologists, internists, nephrologists any where in the world. It is however convenient for our people to spend some of our stolen monies on these foreign medical staff who cannot and do not have the professional experience of our own people. There is an urgency of now to stop this mess.

I doubt if there is any Nigerian, especially those in Diaspora who does not send money to family or friends in Nigeria. Our people have been impoverished beyond comprehension. It is because of the mass scale looting going on in Nigeria. Nothing works again in Nigeria. Life is short and brutish. An average Nigerian wants to emigrate, even if it is to take up menial jobs. Doctors emigrate to work as ward attendants, pharmacists become cleaners and that is beside  those who are sex workers. Our lives is one long story of misery.

However, we can change this situation. We have one more chance to turn things around in Nigeria, to wrestle power from these rapacious thieves. We can do it. We have very short time  to the election of 2011, that is why we face the urgency of now.
Now is the time for us to mobilize, to give our token donation to groups leading this cause. It does not have to be some huge amounts, every five dollars will buy a key to unlock  the shackle of internal slavery once and for all. Yes we can. No one gave President Obama a chance in the beginning. The Clinton machine was a behemoth, but the little donors, those 5-20 dollars donated turned history around.

There is an urgency of now to put our money  where our mouth is, to save our posterity, to create a society where we can live in dignity and safety. There is an urgency of now to return our parents who are in Diaspora home, to take our children back to their roots, to reclaim our lives and restore our locust years. There is no opposition in Nigeria. The opposition is the same side of the same coin as the PDP. The Nuhu Ribadus,  Pastor Tunde Bakares , Yinka Odumakins, El rufais, Omoyele Sowores Olawale Osuns alone cannot do it. They may be the arrow heads, but the rest of us need to stand up to be counted. There is an urgency of now to take our destiny in our hands, to work towards open and transparent elections, to defeat PDP at the polls. There is an urgency of now to live decent lives, to take Nigeria back into the committee of Nations .

Let your text messages work for you, come out when called to do so. Do not even pretend that you can be insulated. If we fail now, we will all fail together and the boast of the PDP will come true, the boast to rule for 60 years. God forbid that we will fold our arms and be sentenced to perpetual servitude. THERE IS AN URGENCY OF NOW, TO DO OUR BIT, TO SUPPORT OPPOSITION TO PDP AND BABANGIDA AND TO RESTORE DIGNITY TO OUR COLLECTIVE LIVES.
