Nigerians Wait on Dr. Jonathan

April 20, 2010

It was one Sunday morning and I was feeling uneasy to go to the church, so I decided to flip on a channel, Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN), a Christian television outfit established by Paul and Jane Crouch based in Santa Ana, California. Right on time, it was “It is Written” Program hosted by a Canadian born Shaun Bonstra, an intelligent evangelist and an apostle of Christ. Shaun reeled out a story that took place in Russia and which invariably changed my life for good.

A greedy man was asked to grab a certain expanse of land to his satisfaction, but the caveat there was that he has to run from one point on the land and to another point and back to the starting point within three hours. The distance covered will be the portion of land in his possession, and the longitude he covered will be credited to him in equal measure of the latitude, a perfect square. The man set out and he covered a large expanse of land that he was confused on how to return to the original point, but he was determined and he made it back within the given three hours.

By the time he stepped his feet on the starting point, he beat his chest for such a milestone, raised up his hands to acknowledge the cheers, for now he is a rich man, but something unusual happened when he brought down his hands; he collapsed and die on that starting point. The elders collected his body and buried him on a side portion of the land, a six feet grave. They told him that “you are buried in this portion and this will be the only inheritance for you or for any man on earth, no matter how rich or how poor”. The import of this story is that in this world, the only possession that truly belongs to us is the six feet grave in which each and every one of us will be buried. This goes a long way to confirm what the first billionaire on earth, Solomon said that vanity upon vanity is vanity. If we know all these and we still refuse to learn anything, then will it not be pertinent to say that man is foolish forever. But some people get it while others do not. There are some people in USA and elsewhere, who understand it a little and they work and set aside their money for philanthropic programs around the world. I have heard many, who wrote in their wills, to give all their estates and worth to the church. How does Africa and indeed Nigeria view the concept of six feet grave possession?

When we talk about Nigeria, we talk about madness without method, and when I am in deep reflection, I look at Nigerians and particularly the leaders as the most foolish people ever to inhabit the human space. One thing I enjoy in American is the basic human needs, shelter, food and clothing. Any other thing apart from these three is a plus, and these three are guaranteed because of good political system, virile human management and vibrant economic system, within the nexus of human fallibility. What does it take to make Nigeria a good living space? It does not take much; even a cave man can do it. In Nigerian situation, two monsters are needed to be banished; greed and corruption. These two vile are sucking oxygen out of the veins of the country. The conveyor belt we desperately need to transport greed and corruption to the destruction site is the political will, and this is not difficult to harness; the only requirements are sacrifice and self taking the rear seat. If the seed does not die, it will not grow a new plant. Self destruction here is Nigeria is more important than me and who am I among 150 million Nigerians?  It needs courage, self-effacing, sacrifice, empathy, kindness, altruistic, godliness, leadership and believing in the concept of six feet grave possession. It begins by how will I feel when I am well fed and my neighbor goes to bed without food?  The wisdom of the old has been, the best gift I can give to my children is sound education, and not fleecing the whole common wealth for generation unborn, thereby leaving the present and the unborn generations prostrate. Our leaders need a paradigm shift.

Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has to know that he has been called by God to salvage Nigeria and Nigerians are waiting on him. He has to understand that he is on the threshold of history and he should not bungle it. He has to know that after the Sam Mbakwe group, during Shagari era, Nigerians have never tasted any good leadership. All the leaders we have been having after that civilian era are certified looters, idiots, psychopaths, criminals, and good-for-nothing from federal to local government levels. Dr. Jonathan has to separate himself away from the bunch by giving leadership to the thirsty Nigerians, he has to remember, he was one of them, but Nigerians will forgive him if he does the right thing now. Leadership, accountability, responsibility and important social contracts with the ruled have disappeared from the lexicons of these latter day “saints”. They rape, humiliate, subdue and submerge the areas of their jurisdictions without cause and they make do with rented crowd, clowns, co-travelers and supporters who urge them to continue, for they are doing the right things. As 2011 draws nearer, watch out for more drama and desperations from these pinheads. We cannot continue in this manner.

Dr. Jonathan, I watched and kept tab on your utterances while you were in USA and that singular journey to USA has wiped out the mess Umaru robbed on us while he was in charge. I am now proud to move around the cities in Los Angeles County with Nigerian flag hanging on my car. Again, you have one year to write your name on the sands of time, and etch your name in the hall of fame. You rightly mentioned the three problems confronting Nigeria during your interview with Christine Amanpuor on CNN. Please, with urgency, remove obstacles that are preventing foreign investors in power sector, so that there will light in Nigeria. 2. State governors, Senators and House of Representatives and other corrupt Nigerians will stop at nothing to prevent you from bringing Nuhu Ribadu home to help you with war on corruption; please, damn them, they are enemies of the state. 3. Our democracy will not grow and prosper until every vote counts in Nigeria, so people like El Rufai should be invited home without delay, to help in any capacity you deem fit. Why should a goal getter like El Rufai rot outside and useless and corrupt politicians assault us in every toss and turn in Nigeria?  Ribadu and Rufai are international materials, brilliant dudes and they can bring down any folk or groups that block them in getting work done for Nigeria. 4. We need a new INEC chairman, a respected Nigerian, whose hands are clean, who cannot be bought, to conduct 2011 elections. 5. The problems of Niger Delta should be tackled squarely with purpose and mission. 6. Insecurity especially in the South East is an embarrassment to the country; please could you do something. We have no leadership in the whole of South East, but self servers.

If you impress Nigerians, believe me they will drag you out to contest the 2011 election. No matter what Ribadu and Rufai did, Nigerians are in a hurry to forgive them because of their sterling leaderships they gave to us during their time. In this moment, at this point in time, the nonsense of zoning is anachronistic and stupid, so let the best rule Nigeria and that will only happen when the peoples’ votes count. Dr. Jonathan, you have reached the pinnacle of your career, and what else, and remember that any time you die, your true possession is six feet grave, so give your best to Nigerians now. Please, worry yourself on how to retrieve Nigeria from the abyss of a cliff, and if your score card is fine with Nigerians, you will see them in the streets demonstrating for you to lead them again. Events in the last two months have indicated clearly that change has come to Nigeria. I watched gleefully, the indomitable Tunde Bakare, Prof. Wole Soyinka and our Amazon, Omotola among many  charging from one end of Abuja to the other end of Lagos, demanding good governance for the generality of Nigerians. I will never waste my time writing about the evil monster, IBB. Nigerians are not fools unless they decide to be one.

Mr. Iwuanyanwu resides in Los Angeles, California.
