Insecurity in Akwa Ibom heightened on Tuesday following the kidnap of a priest two days after Gov. Godswill Akpabio took oath of office to provide protection to lives and property to residents of Akwa Ibom state.

The Catholic Priest of Urua Edere-Obo Parish in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State was the victim of the kidnap gang.

Rev. Father Akaniyene Ntebono was allegedly kidnapped at about 8:00 pm on his way to the school compound where he serves as an acting principal.

The kidnappers have reportedly made a request of N50 million ransom before the clergyman can be released.

SaharaReporters gathered that his abductors trailed him with motorcycles zeroed-in on him as he was driving close to the premises of Notre Damme Girls Secondary School, Urua Edere Obo.

As soon as approached the compound, the kidnappers waylaid him close to the school compound and shot into the air to scare people from coming to rescue him.

They finally abducted him and took him to an unknown destination on a motor bike and abandoned his car on the road.

The Catholic Bishop of Ikot Ekpene Diocese, Rev. Camilus R. Umoh has expressed sadness on the unfortunate incident which according to him is the second in the diocese in the recent past.

Rev. Camilus Umoh urged the people during a vigil night at the premises to pray for the immediate release of the young priest without harm.

The Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO) ASP Oyeakea Oji told SaharaReporters in a telephone conversation that he was yet to be briefed about the incident.
