"Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) ... confirms a fire incident on the K. S. Endeavor jack-up rig. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday," Chevron spokesman Scott Walker said in an emailed statement.

"We are still investigating the incident and are working to fully understand what happened," he added, but did not provide any casualty figures.

Local residents living near Funiwa reported an blast but could not provide information on casualties.

"We heard a loud explosion before the fire, and usually when there is an accident, the oil firm evacuates foreigners before thinking of Nigerians, we wanted to see if we can assist Nigerians but the Chevron security prevented us" local resident told SaharaReporters by phone.

Chevron stated that it was helping any rig workers in need of medical assistance.
