SaharaReporters just learnt that unknown gunmen today shot and killed a top leader of the Shiite Islamic sect in the city of Kano, in Kano State. Our sources disclosed that the shooting took place around 8 a.m. today.

Our sources, who are family members of the victim, told Saharareporters that a group of gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram operatives came to the home of Mohammed Alli, a prominent Shiite leader and civil servant in Kano State, and asked to use one of his motorbikes. “Alhaji Alli turned down the request and was promptly shot at close range by the men,” said one of our sources.

The late Mr. Alli, one of the richest Shiites residing in Kano, lived in the Gadan Kaya area of Kano.

Another family member told SaharaReporters that the remains of Mr. Alli have been deposited at the Murtala Muhammed Hospital in Kano whilst preparations were being made for his burial according to Muslim rites.

The vast Shiite Islamic group in Nigeria is led by Sayyid Ibrahim Zakzaky. The group is reputed to be one of Nigeria's best organized Islamic sects with millions of members spread across northern Nigeria.

A police source said he feared that today's killing could lead to a more dangerous and wider inter-sect war between Shiites and members of the militant Boko Haram group.
