An eyewitness who saw the dastardly act said that the sportsman was attacked by about five assailants on Saturday at about 9.30 a.m

The source said that the assailants had trailed the victim to the stadium where they inflicted several machete cuts on him and fired three gunshots into his neck.

Other athletes who were in training with Ibom before the attack, said that the deceased was in excellent form, as he prepared for the 2012 National Sports Festival scheduled for Lagos later in the year.

They described the murder of Ibom as terrifying, describing how he attempted to resist the assassins.

Mr Onyeka Orji, the Police spokesman in Akwa Ibom, confirmed the incident and said that the police had made some arrests.

Reacting to the news of Ibom’s death, Mr Aniedi Dickson, the State Director of Sports, said that the deceased was a strong boxer and a medal hopeful.

``It is quite unfortunate; he was our medal hopeful, a very strong boy, and his death may dampen the morale of our boys.   We organise trials for them every quarter; in the last trial two weeks ago he was very strong, he was in excellent form,” Dickson said.

Ibom won a bronze medal for Akwa Ibom in the 2009 National Sports Festival hosted by Kaduna State.
