State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, rushed to the scene and now claims that it was triggered by a group of armed robbers on their way to a bank robbery in the city.
According to the governor, the robbers ran out of luck when one of their cigarette-smoking comrades ignited one of the dynamites on the bus leading to the explosion.
An eyewitness has however told Saharareporters that the bus, a Toyota Hiace model, had developed a "mechanical fault" around Rumuokoro roundabout. The occupants disembarked and were calling for help from passers-by when the explosion occurred; killing one Akpan, after the bus driver and conductor disappeared.
The police has also made a statement supporting the armed robbery theory, otherwise nobody has claimed responsibility for the blast.
