Unknown gunmen opened fire at the home of a prominent Shiite cleric in Potiskum, Yobe State and killed three persons. Several others were injured and were rushed to hospital.

Shiite witnesses to the bloodbath told SaharaReporters that the killing was carried out by security operatives,  based on the caliber of bullets, ammunitions and other evidence they claimed were found at the scene.

Reports from the scene note that the cleric has been critical of the Islamist group Boko Haram, but has also criticized a military task force in the area over a recent attack that destroyed the city’s cattle market and left at least 34 people dead.

Police authorities in Yobe State could not be reached on the allegation. The Police Commissioner did not answer several of our calls.

The dead are said to be the brother and the driver of the Shiite leader, Malam Mustapha Lawan Nasidi.
