Activists in Nigeria today opened a reception in honor of Dr. Joe Okei Odumakin, the consistent advocate for the rights of women who was recently honored by the US Department of State alongside other women in the annual International Women of Courage [IWOC] program.

Activists from various NGOs watched a documentary which chronicles her life’s journey concerning her preoccupation the struggle against injustice, and read tributes in her honour.

But rather than simply concentrating on the celebration of her life, the event became another avenue for the discussion of a broader range of burning national issues such as corruption, impunity and injustice.

In her acknowledgement, Okei Odumakin said the honor bestowed on her by the United States has given her greater impetus in the fight against injustice.

"Even if I have to pay with my life, I'll do more because all these injustices must stop", she vowed, adding that the award will serve as a wake-up call to open her eyes wider to injustices in the Nigerian society.
