He replaces Ambassador Olutola J. Onijala, who retired from service on April 29 shortly after a SaharaReporters story that he was continuing in office despite attaining the mandatory retirement age of 60.

Several sources at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had told SaharaReporters that several directors, with the consent of Ambassador Gbenga Ashiru, the Minister, were campaigning against retirement on the grounds that if about 100 of them that were scheduled for retirement by January 2014 actually left, the Ministry would collapse.

Until his appointment, Ambassador Waziri was Protocol Liaison Officer (PLO) to the President.  For the new position, he was chosen ahead of Mr. Oke Amuche, Nigeria's Consul General in Johannesburg, Mr. Friday Okhai, Director in the office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mrs Glady's Dupe Quist-Adebiyi, Director of Protocol in State House; and Ambassador Usman Baraya, Chief of Protocol, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
