The Transition Monitoring Group (TMG)[1]has observed with utter consternation  the shameful and continuous ‘party line’ playing out on  the health condition of the Executive Governor of Taraba State, Mr. Danbaba Suntai  who returned to the country on Sunday, 25th August 2013 from the United States of America where he was recuperating  after an injury he sustained in a private helicopter crash late last year.

Reminiscent of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s political hangers-on to foist on the nation an ailing President, Governor Suntai’s yes-men have adopted surreptitious method to reinstall him. TMG salutes the courage and wisdom of Taraba State House of Assembly for calling on Suntai to personally address the Assembly to ascertain his physical and mental fitness to continue his job as the Chief Executive Officer of the State.

As much as we sympathize with the family of the governor and the good people of Taraba State over the unfortunate event that led to his present predicament, TMG believes it is unethical to shield necessary information and details concerning the governor’s health from the public most especially the people that elected him to office. We are therefore encouraged by the Taraba State House of Assembly’s position and  other concerned parties who have  risen to the political challenge by kick starting the process leading to ascertaining the true health status of Mr. Suntai  to determine his capacity whether to continue in office as governor or otherwise.

We urge the leadership of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to save Nigeria from actions or inactions capable of causing the country another untold embarrassment as witnessed in the case of Late President Yar’Adua by ensuring that rule of law prevails. We call on Nigerians to resist and condemn in its entirety any attempt by the ruling class at taking us through the memorable perilous course of governance by surrogate which is contemptuous to the principle of democracy and rule of law.

Finally, we call on Mr. Danbaba Suntai to follow laid down democratic tenets in his efforts to reassume office,  if he knows he is fit enough, by accepting the resolution of Taraba State House of Assembly which called on him to address it.

In conclusion, TMG call on the Nigerian political class to conduct their activities, utterances and behaviours in a manner that will save the country from crisis capable of leading to unavoidable implosion. The presidency and the ruling party, PDP, should focus more on tackling the myriads of problem threatening the existence of our nation which is a dangerous signal to our democracy, and the march towards 2015 General Elections.
