He replaces the former Assembly Speaker, Haruna Tsokwa, who died on Monday last week after a brief illness.

Kente, a former Deputy Majority Leader of the Assembly, emerged through consensus after members agreed to zone the speakership position to Taraba South.

Tsoka was also from Taraba South.

The Deputy Speaker, Tanko Maikerifi, who reportedly survived an assassination attempt on Sunday, was said to have been disqualified to ensure the emergence of a Christian to fill the post.

Tsokwa, a strong loyalist of the state acting Governor, Garba Umar, died on November 4 at the Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo, the Taraba State capital.
