Nigeria made an historic run at the CHAN tournament today when they defeated Zimbabwe by a lone goal to win Bronze in the third place match in Cape Town South Africa.

Nigeria who is only making a maiden appearance at the tournament this year made it to the semi finals but lost to Ghana on penalties pushing them to play Zimbabwe for third place.

After kickoff at 7pm local time, Zimbabwe who had up to this point conceded only 1 goal in open play, got an early red card when striker Masimba  Mambare fouled Nigerian goalie Chigozie Agbim in the 16th minute and was sent off by Referee Victor Miguel.

Being a man down however did little to deter the Zimbabweans who gave the Nigerian side a good run for their money hitting the side net and making several major incursions into the Nigerian goal area.

The Super Eagles also created a few chances but either failed to bury the ball in the Zimbabwe net or were denied by an agile George Chigova in goal for the Warriors of Zimbabwe.

The ding-dong continued until the 87th minute when Chinonso Obiozor headed home a well taken Christantus Ejike cross, clinching the much needed goal to win the bronze medal.

Reports say the Ghanaian supporters group, waiting for their final clash with Libya at the same venue joined forces with their Nigerian counterparts to cheer the Super Eagles to victory.

Most Nigerians seem happy with bronze considering the fact that the Eagles had little time to prepare for the tournament which they are participating in for the first time.
