The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to decide when to conduct the governorship election in Adamawa State, following the recent impeachment of Governor Murtala Nyako and the resignation of his deputy. The Speaker of the Adamawa State Assembly, Umaru Fintiri, is currently acting as governor.

INEC chairman, Attahiru Jega, disclosed this on Wednesday during a dialogue with reporters at Ibeto Hotels in Apo, a section of Abuja. Mr. Jega said the law was clear that the Commission had to conduct elections within three months following the commencement of the speaker’s role as acting governor of a state.

The INEC chairman also explained that the winner of the elections to be conducted within three months would only complete the tenure of the impeached governor, following which another governorship election would be conducted in 2015.

Mr. Jega stated that as of yesterday, the Commission had not received official notification about the former governor’s impeachment, adding that INEC officials had followed the event through media reports. “We have to be formally notified,” he argued. “Until we get the notification, the Commission cannot meet. We’ll comply fully with the provisions of the law.”
