Ibeju-Lekki Land Crisis: Police Detain Man Who Threatens Residents For The Epe Local Council Chairman

August 20, 2014

A previous police interrogation of the man yielded information that he had confessed to discharging a loaded gun around residents within the community, but claimed the unlicensed gun belonged to his brother.

Police at the Alagbon Station in Lagos State today have detained a man, Kamil Musil, who allegedly fired shots into the air to intimidate land owners from the Idasho Community into selling their properties to businessman Aliko Dangote’s Lekki Free Zone Company.

Police produced Kamil Musil at a special meeting after inviting Idasho community members to attend and express their grievances with Kamil Musil.

A SaharaReporters source reported that also in attendance in Kamil Musil’s corner was Adewunmi Latif Sokotoaran, a self-proclaimed local chief of the community who initiated and presided over land transfer deals between the Lekki Free Zone Company and Idasho community land owners.

SaharaReporters had previously reported that Mr. Kamil Musil was in possession of a gun with which he had threatened members of the Idasho community into releasing their lands to Mr. Dangote’s Lekki Free Zone company.

Mr. Musil is also said to have employed thugs against some Idasho community landowners who had challenged his attempts to sell their lands without their consent.

Others implicated in the problematic land transfer deals also include major players like Kamorudeen Animashaun, the Oba of Epe land, Mr. Segun Agbaje the Local Government Chairman of the Epe Local Council and several officials of the Lagos State Government who possess large stakes in the Lekki Free Zone Company.

A previous police interrogation of Kamil Musil yielded information that he had confessed to discharging a loaded gun around residents within the community, but claimed the unlicensed gun belonged to his brother.

He claimed his brother, whom he identified as Saidi Elegba, obtained the gun from Mr. Segun Agbaje, Chairman of the Epe Local Local Council Area.

Sources knowledgeable about their interrogation also informed SaharaReporters that Mr. Musil had previously turned over the unlicensed gun, which has been described as a ‘pump action’, to police at the Akodo Police Station from where it was then transferred to the Alagbon Police Station.

The Police were said to be on the lookout for Mr. Musil’s brother.

Meanwhile, another member of the unauthorized land trading affair, Mr. Benson Okuyelu, is alleged to be in possession of a unlicensed gun.

Although Mr. Okuyele today denied having a gun in his possession, Idasho community members complained that like Mr, Musil he had also threatened them with a gun he had obtained from from Kamorudeen Animashaun, the Oba of Epe land.

Information gathered indicate that Adewunmi Latif Sokotoaran, the self-proclaimed community chief and other members implicated in the land scandal had engaged their powerful contacts in the State Government in order to avoid police summons and questioning.
