INEC Suspends Controversial 3,000 New Polling Units

November 11, 2014

A statement by Mrs. Augusta C. Ogakwu, Secretary to the Commission, said the decision was taken following the controversy that had trailed the proposal, and the inadequacy of time for its implementation.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has suspended the controversial 3,000 additional polling units it planned to establish across the country.

This decision was taken at the meeting of the commission's management in Abuja on Tuesday.

A statement by Mrs. Augusta C. Ogakwu, Secretary to the Commission, said the decision was taken following the controversy that had trailed the proposal, and the inadequacy of time for its implementation.

She added that INEC would nevertheless continue with the use of Voting Points, where necessary, to mitigate population pressure in overcrowded polling units during the forthcoming elections.

It would also relocate polling units from unsuitable locations; and as much as possible, ensure that polling units are located in enclosures such as classrooms, rather than in open spaces.

INEC had faced widespread criticism over the plan.
