Robbery Scare In Akure: Police Beef Up Security

Some sources told SaharaReporters that some suspected bandits had been loitering around some bank locations situated in the area since yesterday, mostly around First Bank in Alagabaka,
Akure.

Banks in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Thursday hurriedly shut their doors to customers following a robbery scare in the area, a police officer told SaharaReporters.

The officer, who requested anonymity, said the situation forced banks in the capital city to close down operations for fear of being attacked.

Our correspondent in the state gathered that customers who were in the banks in the early hours of the day to carry out transactions were chased out as the banks tried to secure their premises.

Recounting his experience, Ben Anyawu, a gateman in one of the financial institutions in the city, said: "We were here this morning around 10 am when we got signal that armed robbers are in the city and planning to attack banks. So, we have to quickly excused our customers and provide further internal security within the buildings.”

Some customers were seen pleading with gatemen of the banks to allow them to deposit their money.

"Since yesterday, we have been seeing some strange faces mostly guys and their dressing is even killing. They were just making phone calls and one of them even bought a recharge card from me,” a recharge-card hawker revealed to SaharaReporters.

Our correspondent reports that security vehicles were stationed on the roads leading to most of the banks while there was a heavy presence of policemen and some military men at the First Bank junction who took strategic hidden positions as they tried to avert
possible attack on the banks.

The robbery scare also led to police and military street patrol for several hours for several hours.

Efforts to get a comment from police spokesman Wole Ogodo were unsuccessful.
