The chairperson of the Northern Governors wives, Yemisi Gabriel Suswam, led the other wives to Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, to present the food and relief materials worth N40 million. Mrs. Suswam said she and the other wives were in Borno to contribute their “widow’s mite” in order to alleviate the suffering of the internally displaced persons at a most difficult time.

“We are here at the Maiduguri State capital to commiserate with the good people of Borno and the northeast over the persistent destruction of lives and properties, and also to offer their widow's mite towards alleviating the sufferings of the IDPs in various camps across the state capital,” she said.

Mrs. Suswam added that the items were bought from the proceeds of sales of Governors’ Wives Almanac that was launched last year.

In her response, Mrs. Nana Kashim Shettima, the wife of Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State, praised the governors’ wives for their humanitarian gesture. She thanked them for their concern and boldness in defying all security threats to come to Maiduguri to present the relief materials.

Mrs. Shettima also assured the donors that the state government would do a good job of distributing the donated relief materials to the internally displaced people affected by incessant attacks by Islamist insurgents all over the state and in the northeast.

There are numerous camps for the displaced people throughout Maiduguri.
