Civil Society Groups Warn President Jonathan Against Tenure Extension, Plan National Showdown On February 28

A new pro-democracy group, National Union for Democracy (NUD), has warned President Goodluck Jonathan and members of the Nigerian security services to desist from tinkering with the transition program in Nigeria. During a well attended press conference in Lagos today, the group led by notable civil rights attorney, Femi Falana (SAN) delivered a stern warning while reminding Nigerians about past attempts that tinkered with Nigeria's democratic progress that had brought the nation to the doldrums.

After cataloguing recent attempts by President Jonathan's regime to derail recent elections, the group said the newly announced dates for presidential elections is sacrosanct. To send a strong warning to the government the group said their will be a national day of action slated for February 28th across the country where Nigerians will stand hand in hand to send a strong message to the government of Jonathan that it won't tolerate any attempt to interfere with elections.
