Students' Movement, Joint Campus Committee Slams NANS; Says Endorsement Of Goodluck Jonathan Is "Clueless"

"We wish to emphatically state that NANS/JCC Lagos dissociates itself from such baseless, needless, clueless, biased and undignified endorsement of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, the flag bearer of a political party who has ruled Nigeria for 16 years where things have grown from bad to worse", it reads in part.

Students' Movement Joint Action Committee (JCC), an organ of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), has dissociated itself from the endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathan for a second term by the main National Body of Students' Association.

A statement by the Lagos chapter, NANS/JCC signed by its Chairman Sanusi Suleiman, describes the NANS endorsement as "baseless, needless, clueless and undignified".

It states that the National Body of the Students' Union has lost its cause and merely organizing inventive-driven endorsement for "clueless" politicians to obtain "bread and butter".

The statement questions why NANS was silent about various issues ranging from abduction of schoolgirls in Chibok, the scandal missing of 20 billion dollars, general elections postponement, the Boko Haram insurgency and, more so, public strikes by various Academic Staff Unions including ASUU, ASUP and COEASU without taking any action, or voicing of any statements; other than to organize award shows for Governors and make statements of endorsements for a sitting President.

"Our attention has been drawn to a purported endorsement of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan for second term by the apex body of the association in Abuja on Wednesday, 25th February 2015.

NANS/JCC described the endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathan by NANS as "a watershed in history" and a disservice to works of past heroes of the movements.

Over this, the JCC threatened to withdraw from NANS if it fails to desist from engaging in various money spinning ventures meant for self-enrichment by the National Coordinators.

"We want to state categorically that Lagos Chapter of the association will not hesitate to withdraw from the social contract signed with the apex body.

"The kangaroo endorsement indicates that NANS national body has mortgaged their conscience for bread and butter. We also wonder why the most hitherto ideological base of Nigerian student movement could stoop this low", the statement further reads.
