The school was closed down as last month's governorship election approached, in the midst of a crisis that surfaced between lecturers and the management.  The closure was termed an "election recess", but student and staff sources believed it was prompted by the crisis between the Academic Staff Union (ASUU) and top Management of the insinuation.

The sources said ASUU members in LASU had during the crisis demanded the removal of the Vice Chancellor, and that the Lagos State Government and the institution's Management decided to close the school due to growing perceptions that the political opposition party might use the crisis against the ruling party in the State during the governorship election.

The prolonged closure after the elections were concluded however caused the students to pressurize the government to order reopening of the school.
