Anenih Resigns So Jonathan Can Control PDP

“Your Excellency will recall that in a conversation I had with you a few weeks ago, I had offered to step down from the office of the Chairman of our Party’s Board of Trustees and proposed to hand over to you as its new Chairman in a ceremony that would have taken place on the 23rd of May, 2015,” the letter read in part.

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tony Anenih, explained that he resigned on Wednesday to allow President Goodluck Jonathan to take over the position.

Mr. Anenih had earlier stated that he resigned from his position “for personal reasons,” citing that he was unhappy with the direction the PDP was headed.

Mr. Anenih, in a one-page letter to President Jonathan, explained that his resignation would allow the him to become Chairman of the PDP BOT.

Mr. Anenih also referenced other meetings he had with President Jonathan, where he had re-stated his willingness to resign.

“I am happy to inform you that, I remain a loyal foundation member of our great party and will continue to pray for the prosperity of Nigeria, our party, and for you and your family,” he added.

Mr. Anenih’s resignation comes amid turmoil in PDP, following a severe defeat in the presidential and state elections. Mr. Anenih’s resignation coincides with a series of other resignations and high-profile sackings, including the Chairman of the PDP Adamu Mu’azu this week.
