At least 12 people were killed by a Boko Haram grenade attack in Maiduguri, Borno State last night. The terrorists reportedly fired rocket propelled grenades (RPG), which struck 10 homes.

Residents of Maiduguri could not sleep at midnight as result of heavy blast and loud gunshots, as witnesses saw Boko Haram attempt to force their way back into Maiduguri. The Joint Task Force (JTF) between the Nigerian Armed Forces and regional partners have been pushing Boko Haram out of major Nigerian towns in the Northeast.

A top civilian JTF confirmed to SaharaReporters that at least 12 people were killed, and many others in critical condition. He also confirmed that six houses were completely destroyed as a result of RPG attacks by terrorists.

''We have so far counted at least 12 bodies and many others critical injured by the rocket propelled fire into the city last night by Boko Haram,” he said.

The JTF member added that, “those figures may rise later because we are still going around, Dala Lawanti ‎, Bulunkutu Tsillake and Gomarii Tsillake.''

He added that ''they [Boko Haram] made an attempt to ‎forcibly enter Maiduguri but our gallant soldiers repelled them. However, many residents were seriously affected especially little children.''

“Boko Haram terrorists attempted another entry into the town, but could not advance beyond the JTF barricade trenches and sand fortresses around the troubled city,” a low ranked military official, who preferred not to be named in this report for official reasons, informed SaharaReporters.

Another resident of Bulunkutu area of Maiduguri, Bashir Bulama, whose house is not far away from hostile area of Bulunkutu Tsillake and Dala-Lawanti told SaharaReporters by phone, “I counted more than 50 blasts last night. They started around 11:45pm and lasted for two hours. The soldiers and members of civilians JTF were in battle with them till 02:15 am, but more than seven people died in my area‎.'' he said.

Security source confirmed the attack and said one of the suspected terrorists was ‎said to have been arrested by military troops and investigation is going on.
