Committee For The Protection Of Journalists Urge Buhari To Maintain Press Freedom

The Committee for the Protection of Journalists (CPJ), which advocates and protects journalists worldwide, has issued a letter to the Buhari Administration on their concerns of press freedom in the country--as well as violence directed towards members of the press.

The CPJ correspondence to President Buhari said in part, “As Nigeria prepares to enter a new chapter in its history, we urge you and your administration to take steps to ensure that journalists are able to work freely and openly in the country without fear of reprisal of any form.”

The CPJ calls on the Buhari Administration to address and prioritize the democratic principle of press freedom so that corruption can be eradicated.

Last week a reporter with the Daily Trust, Hir Joseph, was brutalized by thugs of Governor Al-Makura of Nasarawa State for writing critical reports about him. The attack left Mr. Joseph severely injured and he was eventually forced to flee Nasarawa State.

The past and present press abuses, specifically those of Hir Joseph, by individuals holding high offices cannot be tolerated, the letter says.
