8th National Assembly Inauguration, Senate President Saraki

Senator Bukola Saraki of Kwara Central, backed by a minority faction of All Progressives Congress (APC) Senators and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senators controversially emerged as President of the Senate on Tuesday June, 9.

The controversial election took place while APC leaders, including President Buhari and Vice President Buhari, were meeting to discussion factional problems within the Party. While meeting to develop consensus on leaders for the National Assembly, a coalition of 57 Senators, out of 108 Senators, cast votes to elect Senator Saraki for the Senate Presidency.

The APC issued a statement saying that Saraki and the APC faction members’ conduct was “totally unacceptable.” However, President Buhari announced that he would respect the processes in the National Assembly.

The PDP, which endorsed Saraki late yesterday, issued an official statement congratulating the Senator on his victory.

Senator Saraki told members of the media that, “I am most honoured and privileged to be elected to serve as President of the Senate. I accept with humility and respect the honour you have conferred upon me today.”
