Yesterday suspected sea pirates attacked a Naval security base and killed a Naval officer along the Akassa Rivers of the Brass Local Government Area (LGA) of Bayelsa State.

The attack, which occurred at noon on Saturday, caught the Naval security post off guard. It threw indigenes of Akassa and the surrounding environment into confusion and fear of reprisal attacks by Naval operatives.

Eyewitness accounts said that armed pirates, numbering about three, opened fire at the Nigerian Navy crew during a routine check in the Akassa area of the State.

According to eyewitnesses, the suspected pirates had passed through the security checkpoint by raising up their hands in compliance to the requirements of routine check security regulations along the waterways. Later they "shocked the Naval team by opening fire while they were attending to another passenger boat."

"While one of the Naval personnel was killed, others took cover. The passenger speed boat sped off to avoid being caught in the crossfire. Some of the passengers were also thrown overboard."
The remains of one naval officer who was working under the FORMOSO division of the Navy in the Brass area has been recovered and deposited at an unnamed morgue in Brass.
