Leaders of 145 Ijaw communities in Bayelsa State have protested the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt, which recently struck down the $1.5b oil spillage and environmental degradation case against Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC).
The group asserts that the judges were compromised by Shell to deliver a favorable judgment for them despite evidence of death, oil spillages, and environmental pollution which Shell activities in the land has brought to them.
Former presidential aspirant of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC), and leader of the protesters Chief Pere Ajuwa, told reporters in Abuja yesterday that they had forwarded a petition to the NRC to take decisive actions on the matter and proceed to the Supreme Court.
He said the matter had appeared before the two chambers of the National Assembly, which ordered Shell to pay the sum of $1.5b to the 254 Ijaw communities in Bayelsa State.
He regretted that Shell took them to the Court of Appeal where judges struck out the decision of the lower court despite overwhelming evidence.
