The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yusuf Lasun, from Osun State has responded to public outcry over the N150 billion National Assembly (NASS) budgetary allocation by saying that the sum is not excessive.

He said, “For the last three years with the exception of 2015, the budget of National Assembly has been N150 billion. And that is exactly 2.67 percent of the total budget of the federation.”

His statements are in response to the public outcry that has followed the release of the budget of the National Assembly. The Nigerian public was outraged to discover that billions of public funds were being funneled into wardrobe, housing, and vehicle allowances for Nigerian legislators.

The worst of these allowances include an N8.64 billion-wardrobe allowance and billions more for furniture, housing, and car allowances provided at the expense of the Nigerian public.

However, Lasun has said that the House will undergo a “needs assessment” under the leadership of Dogara.

Lasun says, “You might be surprised that we have reasons that we can compare with other legislative houses all over the world”.

Even by worldwide comparisons, Nigerian legislators are among the highest paid in the world, making more than British lawmakers and as much as 50 times the amount the average Nigerian makes.
