Olusegun Jawosimi Olusegun, a third year student of the Department of Psychology in the Faculty of Social Sciences, emerged speaker of the parliament in a hotly contested election.

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Jawosimi described the university's reinstatement of the students union as a "restoration of freedom" for students.
A few months ago, the administration at UNILAG decided to lift the ban on student union activities.

According to the new speaker of the student parliament, the administration's decision was laudable. The action, he stated, "buttresses the words of G.A. Cole that where unionism is forbidden, freedom is lost. It is to this end that I thank the University Management for restoring to us our freedom."

The executive arm of the students union was also recently inaugurated. Mr. Abiodun Martins won election as the president of the union.
