Unidentified gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted the chair of the N15 billion Odi Compensation funds disbursement committee, says residents of Odi, a community located along the Bayelsa flank of the East-West road.

The Community had won a case against the Federal Government for the 1999 Odi massacre and was awarded N 37.6 billion compensation by a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt.

The federal government complied with the judgment and approached the community for further talks, negotiated and paid N15 to the community in 2014.

Mr. Asinim Butswat, the spokesman for Bayelsa State police who confirmed the incident, said that efforts were underway to apprehend the hoodlums.

“In the early hours of Friday, 17 July, 2015, some unknown gunmen stormed the residence of Professor Zibokere Daukiye, the Chairman of Odi Compensation Disbursement Committee, at Odi community, in Kolokuma/Opokuma LGA. The unknown gunmen abducted him, whisked him to a waiting speedboat and sped off to an unknown destination. A manhunt have been launched by a combined team of Marine Police, Anti Kidnapping unit and JTF, to rescue the victim and arrest the abductors while Investigation is ongoing,” Butswat said.
