On Friday, Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State announced that a woman would receive the appointment of vice-chairman of the caretaker committees of local government areas (LGAs) in Ebonyi State.

Governor Umahi made his promise when he swore in a number of board and commission members in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.

Though Mr. Umahi's administration claims it is greatly appreciative of the roles women have played in its emergence, Mr. Umahi himself noted that his previous appointments did not favor women.

About 10% of the appointments he has made thus far have been allotted to women.

"We have therefore resolved that women would be appointed vice-chairmen in the caretaker committees of the 13 LGAs of the State, which we would soon inaugurate," Governor Umahi said. "Women would also receive 50% of appointments in the accompanying LGA-development center coordinators' positions, to give them their due in placing in the State's polity.”
